During BACK STAGE ON STAGE designer Martijn Rigters’ graduation project (2013, Interior Architecture and Furniture Design) CUTTING EDGE will be on view. Generally, the foam-cutting technique is focused on creating very regulated shapes and forms by controlling all parameters strictly, like temperature, movement and cutting along a linear path.
Instead of the rigid and fixed lines that are associated with industrial processes, CUTTING EDGE enables the user to compose the blueprint for their own bespoke sofa, by using a range of silhouettes. Each intuitive movement is directly translated into form. In this way the designer manages to use the human body and each movement of the user both as design tool and essential part of the making process. The strength of Martijn Rigters’ work lies in the tension between craft and industry and the interaction between designer, user and machine.
