What is worth more: a kilogram of stones or a kilogram of gold? This famous question by architect Adolf Loos inspired Rixt de Boer, student at the Photography department, to investigate the value of materials and objects. She thereto focuses on bread, an everyday object that has been used by men for ages.
During BACK STAGE ON
STAGE she will bake the most pure and traditional kind of bread: naturally leavened breads. Each bread is then documented with a Polaroid camera to obtain an immediate and unique result for each bread. The prints serve as the only reminder of the performance. This repetitive act will result in a growing collection of photographs. During the performance the value and meaning of an object changes from daily food into a sculptural object, into art. The project also underlines the value of labour; turning something as simple as bread into a monumental activity.
